presence were not accidental. The six samples of Coffee were
free from foreign admixture, but some were of a very low
quality, having but little of the flavor or smell of Coffee.
I was informed by the inspector that at four shops a package
labelled "this is a mixture of coffee and chicory," was handed
to the boy when he asked for coffee, but was returned by
him when he received the article handed over to me. It is
therefore evident that it is a common custom to sell coffee
and chicory mixed, but labelled as such, when coffee is asked
for. The Arrowroot was genuine.
Report for the quarter ending 30th September.—The
articles analysed were Butter 6, Bread 2, Flour 2, Ices 9,
Water 1, and Milk 11.
During this quarter I have analysed 30 samples of food
and 1 of water. The samples consisted of 6 of Butter,
5 of which were genuine and 1 mixed with 42 per cent, of
foreign fat, but was labelled as being a mixture. There were
2 samples of flour and 2 of bread, 1 of the Bread and Flour
having been sent from the Union Workhouse, these were
unadulterated, but one sample of bread previously submitted
contained damaged flour; this sample was not sent from the
authorities but from a person who had received it as out-door
relief, and the damage was such as would have occurred from
bad storage. The ten samples of Ices were obtained from
stalls in the street, or from small shops, and were all good,
the lemon ices contained the juice of the lemon and were
not mixed with sulphuric acid; the raspberry ices contained
some of the pips and fruit of the raspberry, the milk was of
much better quality then before, as in 1 only out of 11 was
the adulteration large, viz., 24 per cent. of added water. In
one as the adulteration was only 8 per cent I did not advise
a prosecution especially as the milk had not been skimmed; a
prosecution was not instituted for the one containing 13
