The steady growth of population in the district is markedly
shown by referring to table X, where we see that the average
number of births in the ten years 1841.51 was only 1398, whilst
in the next decennial period it was 2223; in 1861.71, 3440; and in
the eight years 1871-78 it was as high as 4966; having reached
nearly 6000 in 1878, or more than four times as many as in
1811-51. The deaths have not increased quite so fast, for in
1841-51 the mean number registered was 946; in 1851-61, it
was 1391; in 1861-71 it amounted to 2182; and for the eight
