One groat use of having a disinfecting chamber is, that we
receive notice after the recovery of a patient of the occurrence of
infectious diseases in private families, when we should not
otherwise be informed of them, for we scarcely ever hear of cases
occurring in the private practice of Medical practitioners except
by accident, from neighbours, or, as above stated, after recovery.
This is much to be regretted, especially in cases of Diphtheria
and Typhoid, as they so frequently arise from some imperfection
in the drainage, whereby sewer gas is either brought into the
house or conveyed into the cisterns.
Having thus briefly discussed the statistics of the Small
Pox epidemic, I shall now lay before you, as usual, the various
statistics and other matters connected with the sanitary
condition of the district. The next table being one which
shows the estimated population for the 10 years 1868-77, the
density of population per acre; the number of births, deaths, and
marriages; as well as of births to each 1000 of the population.
