The deaths from the seven diseases which cause the greatest
mortality in the epidemic class are Small Pox, Measles, Scarlet
Fever, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Fever, and Diarrhoea.
The total number was very large, viz. 751, the largest in any
previous year having been 592, which corrected for increase of
population would be 639, so that the excess in 1871 was no less
than 11.2.
