for increase of population, so that 4 per cent. should
be added for each year, i.e., 36 per cent. for 1856, 32 per cent.
for 1857, to render the comparison correct.

The influence of season on mortality was much less marked
than usual, the rate of death for the second and third quarters
having been 23.5 and 23 6 per cent. respectively, whilst the
rate for the first quarter was only 25.7, and for the last quarter
27.2 per cent.
