In the absence of any positive information, we may assume that
the mortality has remained about the same during the period
under consideration, in each Sub-District, after allowing for
variation in the proportions of the population.

The next table which I propose to consider, is one showing
the per centages of deaths from all diseases under 19 different
heads, during the years 1857-64. By this table we ascertain
that although the deaths were considerably greater than those
in 1863, (having indeed been more than 200 in excess), yet
the mortality from epidemic diseases, was 34 below those for
that year, and with the exception of the extremely healthy year
1860, was the smallest pro rata since 1856. This is very satisfactory
indeed, because it is this particular class of diseasse
