Subsequently a systematic examination of beef arriving from Australia was made,
and in the course of a 10 percentage examination of 11,435 hind-quarters, 168 crops,
and 467 buttocks, small " worm" nests were found in only 5 hind-quarters.
Four hundred and seventy-one crops of beef, which arrived on the s.s. " Marere,"
from Australia, on the 3rd March, were found not cut in accordance with the
Regulations made by the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia, an insufficient
quantity having been cut off the wing end of the fore-quarter. The joints were really
fore-quarters with the brisket and part of the flank removed.
Each crop was examined, but not a single u worm " was found.
MUTTON AND LAMB.
The total importations of frozen mutton 'and lamb into the United Kingdom from
Australia, New Zealand and South America was :—
From Australia .... 3,722.830 carcases.
,, New Zealand ... 6,181,184 „
„ South America 2,884,825 „
Total 12,788,839 carcases.
Although this shows a decrease of 147,326 carcases, or 1.1 per cent, on the total
for 1913, the number of carcases discharged from vessels in the Port of London,
namely 8,496,735, was an increase of 157,621 carcases on the previous year and
represented 66'43 per cent, of the whole quantity landed in the United Kingdom from
the above-mentioned countries.
The total quantity seized by your officers as unfit for human food and destroyed
comprised 5,844 carcases, 1,142 pieces and a quantity of trimmings, weighing 161 tons
11 cwts. 1 qr. 22 lbs., being upwards of 27 tons in excess of the total of the
previous year.
The largest seizure was about 113 tons, and particulars of this are given on
page 49.
Although quantities of mutton and lamb arrived from the Continent, your
officers did not find it necessary to seize any.
PORK.
The pork seized and destroyed, namely 236 carcases and 2 pieces, shows a
considerable increase compared with the previous year, when the total was only 4
carcases and 6 pieces.
