On the 30th June, information was received that a man from the barque "Hudson,"
lying at Northfleet, was taken ill with shivering and pains in the stomach; he also had
a suspicious rash. The man consulted a doctor and the case was notified as one of
Small-pox. The case was removed to Denton Hospital. On July 1st, however, it was
ascertained that the disease was not Small-pox but Measles. All necessary precautions
and disinfection were adopted. Vaccination of the crew was performed.
The s.s. "Nevasa," of Glasgow, 133,102, arrived on the 17th August from Calcutta,
having landed a case of Small-pox at Colombo on the 28th July. The vessel was
disinfected and the crew vaccinated. No further case occurred, and all were well on
arrival at Gravesend.
A circular letter dated 31st August, 1914, was received from the Local Government
Board with regard to the measures to be taken to prevent the spread of Small-pox.
The arrangements at Gravesend and Denton Hospital for dealing with such cases,
which have proved efficient in previous epidemics, should prove equally satisfactory
and sufficient to deal with any probable outbreak of Small-pox,
