CLEAN AIR ACT 1956
The work in connection with the setting up of Smoke Control Areas
has proceeded with increased momentum during the year and now forms
a major part of the work of the Public Health Inspectors' Section. During
the year nearly two thousand visits were made to houses, which have been,
or it is proposed will be, included in such areas.
Two parts of the Borough have now been declared smoke contol
areas. They are:—
(1) That part of the Borough bounded by the boundary with the
Urban District Councils of Carshalton and Coulsdon and Purley and by
Woodcote and Heathdene Roads. The order relating to this area came
into force on the 1st November, 1961.
(2) That part of the Borough bounded by the County Borough of
Croydon and the Urban District of Coulsdon and Purley and by Woodcote
Road, Sandy Lane South and Stafford Road. The order relating
to this area was made and confirmed in 1961 and will come into force on
the 1st October, 1962.
During the year houses in a third part were visited with a view to
their inclusion in a third smoke control order. The area is that bounded
by Woodcote Road, Sandy Lane South and Stafford Road.
INDUSTRIAL PREMISES
During the year 104 observations were made on the chimneys of
Industrial premises. No contraventions of the Dark Smoke (Permitted
Periods) Regulations were reported.
Advice was given when consulted, on the heights of new chimneys
and new furnaces to be installed.
