During the year voluntary help was again generously given by many
ladies in the district, in assisting in the operation of the infant welfare
centres. Among these, special mention should be made of the members
of the British Red Cross Society, who continued to supply the great
majority of the voluntary help given.
The ladies of the W.V.S. continued to organize the sales and distribution
of the Welfare Foods, previously administered by the Ministry
of National Insurance.
Infant Welfare Services. Infant Welfare clinics and general supervisory
control through health visiting were continued by the Surrey
County Council during the year. In general, a high standard of visiting
and a smooth and efficient service were maintained.
Following the disastrous fire which destroyed the Grange Mansion in
January 1960, it was found necessary to provide a new Infant Welfare
Clinic at All Saints Church Hall, New Road, Mitcham Junction to serve
the residents in the Hackbridge and Mitcham Junction areas. This clinic
was opened on the 1st February, 1960. In addition, weekly sessions were
commenced at the Baptist Church Hall, Queens Road, Wallington, on
13th January, to meet the increased demand from mothers in the area
who had been attending the Grange Mansion clinic.
