SMOKE CONTROL AREAS
In March 1959 the Council approved in principle the making of a
Smoke Control Area comprising that part of the Borough bounded by
the boundary with the Urban Districts of Carshalton and Coulsdon and
Purley and by Woodcote and Heathdene Roads. At the same time it was
decided that, subject to the results of experience gained in the area
mentioned above and to being satisfied at each stage of the programme
that the necessary quantities of suitable smokeless fuels would be available,
to inform the Minister of Housing and Local Government that the
Council proposed to include the whole Borough in Smoke Control Areas
and that they proposed to do so over a period of ten years. Following
the approval in principle of the Minister a survey of the first area was
completed during the year by the Public Health Inspectors. In October
the Council declared a Smoke Control Order in respect of this part of the
Borough subject to the approval of the Minister. Information obtained
during the survey is summarised below.
In November 1959, following a survey of 191 buildings in the area,
the Minister was asked to approve in principle the making of a Smoke
Control Order comprising the area bounded by the County Borough of
Croydon and the Urban District of Coulsdon and Purley and by Woodcote
Road, Sandy Lane South and Stafford Road. This area adjoins an
area in the County Borough of Croydon to which a Smoke Control Order
applies. The survey of the buildings was commenced during the year.
