UNSATISFACTORY SAMPLES
Formal Sample No. 78—Beef Sausages
The sample contained sulphite preservative, 300 parts per million,
calculated as sulphur dioxide. Warning letter sent to vendor.
Informal Sample No. S.2—Bread
The sample, submitted as a result of a complaint, contained a dead
insect identified as an Ephestia larva. The larva was adhering to the
bottom of the loaf, in which position it had evidently been baked.
Investigations at the bakehouse revealed no evidence of infestation.
Letter sent to manufacturer.
Informal Sample No. S.3—Bun Round
The sample, submitted as a result of a complaint, contained a
phenolic compound, approximately 0.005 per cent. The bun had an
objectionable taste, due to the presence of the phenol, and was unfit for
consumption. Investigations carried out at the bakery revealed no
evidence of phenolic compound. In view of doubt as to time and place
of contamination and unwillingness of the complainant to give evidence,
no further action was taken.
