The weather during the swimming season was very fine, and many
more residents availed themselves of the facilities, with the result that the
number of attendances was much higher than in the bad summer of 1954.
The work of the Chief Sanitary Inspector's Department was considerably
handicapped during 1955 by delays experienced in filling vacancies
with suitably qualified persons, due to the present shortage of
Sanitary Inspectors and by changes in the clerical staff. In all, 55 man
weeks of Sanitary Inspectors' time were lost during the year with the
result that the number of inspections and visits recorded is lower than
in the previous year. Changes in the clerical staff resulted in further loss
of achievement.
In conclusion, I wish to place on record my appreciation of the loyal
service and valuable assistance I have received from all the members of
my staff throughout the year.
I have the honour to be,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
PATRICK J. O'CONNELL,
July, 1956. Medical Officer of Health.
