RIVERS AND STREAMS
The cleansing of that section of the River Wandle which is the
responsibility of the Council, namely, from north of the Carshalton
Railway line to the Croydon Boundary, has been maintained throughout
1951. The obstructions in that portion of the river bed under Wallis'
Mill in Wandle Road, Beddington, have been removed and normal flow
has been resumed, thereby reducing the possibility of flooding in that
area.
Additional oil filters have been installed in factories in the Croydon
area with a very noticeable improvement in the cleanliness of the river.
CLOSET ACCOMMODATION
Practically the whole of the area is on the water carriage system,
draining into public sewers. There are a few chemical and earth closets,
chiefly for use on sports grounds within the district, whilst four cesspools
were in use in the district at the end of the year.
PUBLIC CLEANSING
The collection of house refuse throughout the Borough was maintained
during the year on a weekly basis. The joint scheme of controlled
tipping on Mitcham Common with the Croydon and Mitcham Authorities
has continued throughout the year.
The type of receptacle in use throughout the Borough continues to be
the portable galvanised iron covered bin. Residents are being encouraged
to provide a receptacle of smaller capacity in order to ease the problem
of collection and reduce the quantity of refuse.
The collection of trade refuse was also continued as required.
Cesspools and earth closets are dealt with by occupiers of the premises
concerned, which continued arrangement is satisfactory.
