Housing undoubtedly remains one of the most crucial problems, not
only in this Borough, but for the country as a whole. Unfortunately, the
limitations of space now prevent the Corporation from undertaking any
large-scale expansion.
During the year, as will be seen from the tables set out on pages 35—37,
there was no major outbreak of infectious disease. The highest incidence,
at a total of 116, was reached by measles, affecting principally the children
between the ages of 2 and 10 years, and showing its highest incidence
between the months of April and July. Only one case of acute anterior
poliomyelitis (infantile paralysis) was notified, and in this case no residual
disability resulted. No cases of diphtheria occurred in the district during
the year, which may be accounted for by the increasing number of parents
availing themselves of the facilities for prevention of diphtheria by
immunisation.
Reviewing the year as a whole, records show that the Corporation
have again completed a year, which they can regard with satisfaction in
the matter of health.
During the year, much pleasure was expressed throughout the Borough
at the Corporation's policy in continuing to conduct the swimming bath
at the Beddington Orphanage for the benefit of residents during the
Summer months. On page 28 a brief note will be found describing the
arrangements which were made, and the number of attendances during
the period of 18 weeks the bath was open. All the arrangements and the
work of supervision were conducted by the Public Health Department
staff.
In conclusion, I wish to place on record my appreciation of the loyal
service and valuable assistance I have received from all the members of
my staff throughout the year.
I have the honour to be,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
PATRICK J. O'CONNELL,
August, 1950. Medical Officer of Health.
