CLOSET ACCOMMODATION.
Practically the whole of the area is on the water carriage system,
draining into the public sewers. There are a few chemical and earth
closets, chiefly for use on sports grounds within the district, whilst 4
cesspools were in use in the district at the end of the year.
PUBLIC CLEANSING.
The collection of house refuse throughout the Borough is carried
out by direct labour, under the supervision of the Borough Surveyor
and Engineer. The refuse is deposited on a site within the district.
Collections were made fortnightly throughout the year, the available
labour force being augmented by Italian co-operators for most of
the period. With the return of men from the Forces, the co-operators
were superseded, but the labour position did not reach the point which
would admit the resumption of weekly collection.
The type of receptacle in use throughout the Borough is the portable,
galvanised iron, covered dustbin.
The Council do not undertake the removal of the contents of earth
closets and cesspools from private premises. The occupiers of the
premises concerned carry out the work in a satisfactory manner.
The Croydon Corporation commenced tipping in the latter part
of the year 1940 on a site in the Borough north of Therapia Lane.
This work is continuing satisfactorily and is under constant supervision
by the Council's Officers.
SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA.
The following statement by the Senior Sanitary Inspector gives
statistics as to the number of complaints received, inspections made,
defects remedied, and other work carried out by the Sanitary
Inspectors.
