MATERNITY WARD.
The arrangements between the Corporation and the Carshalton,
Beddington and Wallington District (War Memorial) Hospital whereby,
under an agreement, the hospital provided limited facilities for cases
referred from the Ante-Natal Clinic by reason of unsuitable home
conditions or for medical reasons, continued throughout the year.
During the year under review there were no cases admitted under
this scheme, but during this period 88 cases were admitted for confinement
under arrangements made privately. In addition, a further 142
cases were confined during the year in various County Hospitals as
under:—
St. Helier County Hospital 102
Epsom County Hospital 20
Dorking County Hospital 16
Redhill County Hospital 4

HOME HELP AND DOMESTIC HELP SERVICE.
This important section of the Council's Public Health Services
functioned satisfactorily during 1945. Despite the fullest assistance
from the Ministry of Labour and National Service, extreme difficulty
was experienced in maintaining the service at the authorised personnel
establishment of 4 full-time and 2 part-time Home Helps. Cooperating
with the Ministry of Labour and National Service in an
effort to obtain suitable recruits, a summer publicity week was
organised in the Borough, during which period all the usual publicity
media—newspaper advertisements, cinema slides, posters and leaflets
—were used to the full. The results were most disappointing and,
although the Corporation had increased wages and improved conditions
of employment closely in conformity with the Hetherington
recommendations, the response did not fulfil expectations.
