SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
WATER SUPPLIES.
During the year 227 samples of water were submitted for
bacteriological examination in the Council's laboratory.
Samples were taken as follows: —
Main Water Supply (Sutton Well and Woodmansterne
Well) (An average per month of 14 samples) 164
Private Wells 61
Spring Water (Water-cress beds) 2
The main water supply continues to be satisfactory both in
quantity and in bacteriological purity.
The present daily routine of systematic bacteriological analyses
adopted at the Sutton District Water Company's premises ensures a
supply of safe drinking water, and during the year no authentic case
of illness arising in the district associated with drinking water was
brought to light.
The routine sampling conducted in the district by the Council's
staff and examination in the Council's laboratory provides a check and
safeguards the water as supplied at the consumer's tap.
The samples examined showed that the water supplied by the
Sutton District Water Company maintained a high standard of
bacteriological purity throughout the year.
Manufacturers using private wells in the Borough continued to
chlorinate their supplies.
The Medical Officer of Health investigated such waters throughout
the year, and is pleased to record that a high standard of
bacteriological purity was maintained.
The Company have made adequate provision to meet disturbances
in the water supply resulting from enemy action. Incidents
in which they were called upon to repair mains and distribute water
by cartage were attended by no untoward results, the repairs being
carried out with expedition and efficient sterility.
Certain additional sources of supply, which might be used in an
emergency were investigated by the Medical Officer o'f Health and an
emergency scheme for the district was agreed upon by the Civil
Defence Committee.
