Graded Milk. Two samples of Tuberculin Tested milk failed to
pass the Methylene Blue Reduction Test and 7 samples of Pasteurised
milk gave bacterial counts of over 100,000 per millilitre. The samples
of Pasteurised milk were examined for the presence of Phosphatase,
but in no instance was there indication that the milk had not been
treated in accordance with the conditions prescribed in the Milk
(Special Designations) Orders.
Ungraded Milk. Of the 53 samples of ungraded milk examined
during the year, 41 were found not to contain more than 200,000
bacteria per millilitre. In 47 of the samples no coliform bacillus was
found in 0.01 millilitre. Of the remaining 6 samples 5 showed the
bacillus to be absent from 0.001 millilitre. Where the results show a
total number of bacteria exceeding 200,000 per millilitre or the coliform
bacillus is found in 0.01 millilitre, it is assumed that the sample
has not attained the standard of bacterial cleanliness which can
reasonably be expected. During the year, therefore, appropriate
action was taken in all such cases to secure an improvement in the
bacteriological condition of the milk.
Tubercle Bacilli. Fifty-two samples of milk were examined
microscopically for the presence of acid-fast bacilli. A negative result
was obtained in each case.
