weir of approximately double the capacity with a large penstock and
by-pass will be constructed.
CLOSET ACCOMMODATION.
Practically the whole of the area is on the water carriage system,
draining into the public sewers.
During the year the earth closets at 22 dwelling-houses were converted
from the conservancy system to water closets and connected to
the public sewer. There remains now only a few chemical and earth
closets chiefly for use on sports grounds.
PUBLIC CLEANSING.
A weekly collection of house refuse throughout the Borough is
carried out by direct labour under the supervision of the Borough
Engineer and Surveyor. The refuse is deposited on a site within the
district.
The type of receptacle in use throughout the Borough is the portable
galvanised iron covered dustbin.
The Council do not undertake the removal of the contents of earth
closets and cesspools. The occupiers of the premises concerned carry
out the work in a satisfactory manner.
It is anticipated that tipping on land belonging to the Croydon
Corporation and at the rear of the existing tip will be commenced
early in 1939.
The Croydon Corporation commenced tipping on land in the
Borough, adjoining Beddington Lane, in the latter part of the year in
accordance with an agreement with this Council.
SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA.
The following statement by the Senior Sanitary Inspector gives
statistics as to the number of complaints received, inspections made,
defects remedied, and other work carried out by the Sanitary
Inspectors.
