Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Wallington.
To His Worship the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Borough of Beddington and Wallington.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to present my annual report for 1937. The period covered
represents the nine months of the year in which I have held office as
your first full-time Medical Officer of Health, and the three months
previous which were covered by the service of my predecessor.
The year under review from a public health standpoint was very
satisfactory.
Infectious disease notifications reached an extremely low level and
the district was spared epidemics of any importance.
In summarising the annual records it must be admitted, however,
that this year, teeming as it was with major events of
municipal interest, was not one in which (in some branches of the
work at least) great achievements can be recorded in terms of statistics.
Much of the work of the Public Health Committee concerned re-organisation
and important decisions of principle, which, while laying the
foundation of an efficient service for the future, cannot in this year of
their inception be expected to produce notable results.
The report represents in statistical form a record of the state of
the health of the Borough during the past year.
The general form recommended by the Minister of Health has been
followed throughout and, in presenting the statistical tables, an effort
has been made to incorporate more tables showing Ward distribution
of relevant data.
Much of the text has been curtailed and it is to be hoped that the
tabular presentation of the main facts will be sufficient.
