The total deaths which were registered during the year numbered
2,544, viz.:—1.424 boys and 1,120 girls. Table B* of the Appendix
indicates the deaths which were registered in the several Sub-Registration
Districts. A deduction has now to be made of those deaths to the
number of 972, which occurred among non-residents, nearly all of whom
died in the London Hospital; and then to the remaining sum must be
added the deaths of those Residents who died in Outlying Public Institutions,
and elsewhere, outside the District. These deaths numbering 232,
and the places where the deaths were registered are tabulated in the
Appendix as usual.t Thus the corrected number of District deaths for
the year was 1,804. A death-rate for the year of 22.8 per 1,000 is to be
recorded, as compared with a Metropolitan death-rate of 19.7 per 1,000.
These statements shew an increased death-rate over the previous year of
2.0 per 1,000 for London as a whole, and 2.5 per 1,000 for the Whitechapel
District.
Probably the severe cold during the early part of the year may
account for this decline from the satisfactory statement which I produced
twelve months since, as the increased mortality is distributed fairly
throughout the District.
I append a Table shewing the correct number of District deaths for
each Sub-registration District during the past ten years.
Sub-Registration Districts. | 1886. | 1887. | 1888. | 1889. | 1890. | 1891. | 53 weeks 1892. | 1898. | 1894. | 1895. |

The excess of births over deaths for the year 1895 was 1,308. In the
two preceding years it was 1,568 and 1,194 respectively.
The ages at death of the Residents who died during the year are
recorded in Table Ft of the Appendix.
The percentage of deaths for each Age period was as follows :—
26.7% of the toial deaths took place under the age of 1 year.
17.8 ,, ,, ,, between the ages of 1 and 5.
4.2 „ „ „ „ 5 and 20.
13.9 ., ,, „ „ 20 and 40.
17.4 „ „ „ „ 40 and 60.
16.4 „ „ „ „ 60 and 80.
2.6,, ,, ,, over the age of 80.
Compared with the Metropolitan deaths, including Whitechapel, the
infant deaths were as follows:—
The deaths of infants under the age of one year, in London, equalled
255 per cent, of the total deaths, and 16.5 per cent, of the registered
births; whilst in the Whitechapel District those infants who died under
the age of one year equalled 26.7 per cent, of the total deaths, and 15.4
per cent, of the registered births.
