No Uncertified Death was reported during the year.
The Public Mortuary and Coroner's Court have now been in
active operation for nine months. In that time exactly 100 entries
were made in the books. Great satisfaction with the general
arrangements have been expressed by the Coroner for that part of
the District wherein the building is contained, as well as by the
Doctors who have had occasion to use the post-mortem room. It
is an open secret that, owing to the Whitechapel District possessing
the doubtful advantage of being subject to the jurisdiction of two
Coroners, neither of whom may officially step over his own boundary,
difficulty occasionally arises. I propose shortly to call the attention
of the Board to this matter, so that the County Council, or the
Home Office may be officially informed of the certainty that, at
some time, a scandal must be the outcome of the present arrangement.
Should such representation fail to effect the conveyance to
the District Mortuary of those deceased residents who require
removal, I shall follow out my original plan most strenuously—that
plan your Board is already familiar with. I have already adopted
it partially.
