FOOD AND DRUGS ACT.
To Dr. Loane, Medical Officer pf Health for the Whitechapel District.
Sir,
During the year ended 31st December, 1891, 147 Samples
of Food and Drugs were submitted to the Public Analyst for
analysis, viz., 59 milks, 35 breads, 35 flours, 6 sugars, 2 coffees,
3 oatmeals, 1 butter, and 6 drugs.
Ten of the milk samples were adulterated with water varying
from 6 to 20 per cent., and one milk was deficient in cream to the
extent of 22 per cent. The remainder of the articles were reported
to be genuine.
Two of the vendors who sold milk adulterated with 17 to 20
per cent, of water respectively, were summoned before Mr. Mead
at the Thames Police Court, who dismissed both summonses.
The only conviction was for milk adulterated with 15 per cent. of
added water. Fine and costs together amounted to £3 8s. 8d.
In the other cases the vendors were cautioned, it being their first
offence.
