The total births which were registered in the Whitechapel
District during the 52 weeks of the year 1891, amounted to 3063.
The first Table of the Appendix as usual explains where these
births were registered.* I have further dealt with the 127 births
which took place in the Whitechapel Union Infirmary, and distributed
them amongst the several Sub-Districts where the mothers
previously resided, so that correctly the births are as here stated0

The total deaths which were registered during the year amounted
to 2,425. They were registered by the local registrars as set out
in Table B.* Many of the persons included in the returns were
non-residents, and of course some residents died in institutions, etc.,
outside the District. Tables C* and D* exhibit in detail these
deaths. It will suffice now to explain that the correct number of
District deaths is arrived at by deducting from the total, 778, that
being the number of non-resident deaths, and then adding the 192
deaths of residents from outlying institutions. Thus the correift
District mortality amounts to 1839. which is equal to a death-rate
of 24.7 per 1000 calculated upon the enumerated population.
The death-rate in the last Census year was 26.6 per 1000 ; there
is here matter for congratulation—a reduction in the District
death-rate of 2 per 1000. The natural increase of births over
deaths was 1224.
