THE 110th QUARTERLY REPORT.*
REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
For the Quarter ended 29th December, 1883.
To the Board of Works, Whitechapel District.
Gentlemen,
In the Quarter that ended on Saturday, the 29th December,
1883, the total births in the District were 585, viz.: 297 males and 288
females; and the deaths 509, viz.: 25S males and 251 females. The
excess of births over deaths has therefore been, during the Quarter,

of the District, thereby reducing the total mortality to 398, and thus
increasing the number of births above deaths to 187. An allowance,
however, must be made for the deaths of residents in public
institutions outside the District ; but of those I have no return. In
the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the total births were
617, and the total deaths 619. The weekly average of births was 45.0
and of deaths 39.1; and in the present Quarter the weekly average of
births has been 47.4, and of deaths 47.6.
In the Spitalfields sub-District the births were 179 and the deaths
70; in the Mile End New Town 185 and the deaths 134 (in this
sub-District the Workhouse is situated); in the Whitechapel North
58 and the deaths 35 ; in the Whitechapel Church 54 and the deaths
212 (in this sub-District the London Hospital is situated); in the
Goodman's Fields 61 and the deaths 30 ; and in the Aldgate 48 and
the deaths 28. The deaths have exceeded the births in the White-
