REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
For the Quarter ended 29th September, 1883.
To the Board of Works, Whitechapel District.
Gentlemen,
In the Quarter that ended on Saturday, the 29th September
1883, the total births in the District were 590, viz.: 283 males and 307
females; and the deaths 534, viz.: 304 males and 230 females. The
excess of births over deaths has therefore been, during the Quarter,
56. As the deaths of 141 non-residents, which occurred in the
London Hospital, are included in the mortality returns, a deduction
of such deaths must be made in order to estimate the correct mortality
of the District, thereby reducing the total mortality to 393, and thus
increasing the number of births above deaths to 197. An allowance,
however, must be made for the deaths of residents in public
institutions outside the District ; but of those I have no return. In
the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the total births were
588, and the total deaths 550. The weekly average of births was 45.2
and of deaths 42.3 ; and in the present Quarter the weekly average of
births has been 45.3, and of deaths 41.0.
In the Spitalfields sub-Distridt the births were 184 and the deaths
75; in the Mile End New Town 171 and the deaths 135 (in this
sub-Distridt the Workhouse is situated) ; in the Whitechapel North
73 and the deaths 37 ; in the Whitechapel Church 48 and the deaths
222 (in this sub-District the London Hospital is situated); in the
Goodman's Fields 80 and the deaths 38 ; and in the Aldgate 34 and
the deaths 27. The deaths have exceeded the births in the Whitechapel
Church sub-District by 174, but the deaths of the 141 nonesidents
in the London Hospital must be deducted. The proportion
of births to deaths is therefore 48 to 81.
