those of non-residents, and 41.8 per cent. to the total births. The
rate of mortality under 1 year, in relation to the total births, is 22.3
per cent.
Pauper Illness in the District.
The Medical Officers of the Union have attended during the past
Quarter 821 new cases of illness out of the Workhouse; including
2 of small-pox, 5 of measles, 8 of scarlet-fever, 2 of hooping-cough,
78 of diarrhœa, 31 of febricula, 1 of fever, and 9 of erysipelas. In
the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the number of pauper
cases of illness was 867; including 7 of small-pox, 35 of measles, 31
of scarlatina, 11 of hooping-cough, 38 of diarrhoea, 28 of febricula, 4
of fever, and 2 of erysipelas. The total number of cases of illness in
the Workhouse has been 679, including 1 of measles, 3 of hoopingcough,
39 of diarrhœa, 11 of erysipelas, and 9 of febricula. In addition
to the above cases, there were 39 of syphilis and gonorrhœa; thus
making a total of 718.
Uncertified Deaths.
No uncertified deaths are recorded during this Quarter.
Meteorology of Greenwich;
The Returns of the Registrar-General show that the rain-fall in
the Metropolis during the Quarter, has been 7.99 inches. One inch
deep of rain-fall on an acre weighs (allowing 10-lbs. to a gallon, which
is the weight of a gallon ot distilled water) nearly 101 tons. During
the corresponding Quarter of last year the rain-fall was 11.41 inches.
The average annual rain-fall at Greenwich in sixty-three years was
25.4 inches. The mean temperature of the air was 61°.3. In the
corresponding Quarter of last year it was 58°.2. The hottest days
during the Quarter were Thursday, the 2nd September, Friday, the
3rd September, and Saturday, the 4th September, when the thermometer
indicated respectively 82°.5, 85°.0, and 87°.2. The hottest day
during the corresponding Quarter of last year was on Wednesday,
the 30th July, when the thermometer indicated 80°.6. The highest
mean temperature during any week in the Quarter was in that which
ended September 4th, when it was 67°.3.3
