REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
For the Quarter ended 2nd October, 1880.
To the Board of Works, Whitechapel District.
Gentlemen,
In the Quarter that ended on Saturday, the 2nd October, 1880, the
total births in the District were 590, viz.: 289 males and 301 females;
and the deaths 556, viz.: 334 males and 222 females. The excess of
births over deaths has therefore been, during the Quarter, 34. As
the deaths of 125 non-residents, which occurred in the London Hospital,
are included in the mortality returns, a deduction of such deaths
must be made in order to estimate the correct mortality of the District,
thereby reducing the total mortality to 431, and thus increasing the
number of births above deaths to 159. An allowance, however, must
be made for the deaths of residents in public institutions outside the
District; but of those I have no return. In the corresponding Quarter
of the previous year, the total births were 658, and the total deaths
532. The weekly average of births was 50.6, and of deaths, 40.9; and
in the present Quarter the weekly average of births has been 45.3, and
of deaths 42.7.
In the Spitalfields sub-District the births were 183 and the deaths
110; in the Mile End New Town 150 and the deaths 127 (in this subDistrict
the Workhouse is situated); in the Whitechapel North 85
and the deaths 48; in the Whitechapel Church 60 and the deaths 195
(in this sub-District the London Hospital is situated); in the Goodman's
fields 78 and the deaths 52; and in the Aldgate 34 and the
deaths 24. The deaths have exceeded the births in the Whitechapel
Church sub-District by 135, but the deaths of the 125 non-residents in
the London Hospital must be deducted from the total deaths in that
Institution; the proportion of births to deaths is therefore 60 to 70.
The deaths in the London Hospital have been 158; of these,
125 were of non-residents, 17 of residents, and 16 of persons who either
