REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
For the Quarter ended 3rd April, 1880.
To the Board of Woeks, Whitechapel District.
Gentlemen,
In the Quarter that ended on Saturday, the 3rd April, 1880,
(comprising 14 weeks), the total births in the District were 846, viz.:
426 males and 420 females; and the deaths 772, viz.: 425 males and
347 females. The excess of births over deaths has therefore been,
during this Quarter, 74. As the deaths of 106 non-residents, which
occurred in the London Hospital, are included in the mortality
returns, a deduction of such deaths must be made in order to estimate
the correct mortality of the District, thereby reducing the total
mortality to 666, and thus increasing the number of births above
deaths to 180. An allowance, however, must be made for the
deaths of residents in public institutions outside the District; but
of those I have no return. In the corresponding Quarter of the
previous year (13 weeks) the total births were 753, and the total
deaths 647. The weekly average of births was 57.2, and of deaths,
50.0, and in the present Quarter the weekly average of births has
been 60, and of deaths 55.1.
In the Spitalfields sub-District the births were 229 and the
deaths 128; in the Mile End New Town 239 and the deaths 234 (in
this sub-District the Workhouse is situated) ; in the Whitechapel
North 131 and the deaths 75; in the Whitechapel Church 97 and
the deaths 216 (in this sub-District the London Hospital is situated);
in the Goodman's Fields 98 and the deaths 68; and in the Aldgate
52 and the deaths 51. The deaths have exceeded the births in the
