when it was 74°.5. "The mean temperature for the year 1879 was
46°.2, which was 3°.3 below the average of the previous 38 years.
Low temperatures were recorded in every month of the year, and
the month of December was colder than in any December in this
century, its mean temperature being 6°.7 below the average."

Artizans' Dwellings Act, 1875. Pearl Street Area Scheme.
In a Report recently submitted to the Metropolitan Board of
Works by the Works and General Purposes Committee, it was
recommended that the Medical Officer of Health be informed that it
is not the intention of the Board to prepare a scheme under the
Artizans' Dwellings Act, for the Great Pearl Street Area, defined in
his representation dated 20th July, 1877.
This area, as may be seen on referring to pages 10, 11, and 12 of
my Report for the Quarter ended 30th June, 1877, was brought under
the notice of the Medical Officer of Health by a communication,
signed by 34 inhabitants of Spitalfields, including the firm of Truman,
Hanbury, Buxton & Co., complaining of the unhealthy condition of
the said area, and requesting me to inspect the same, under the provisions
of the Artizans' and Labourers' Dwellings Improvement Act,
1875. The area is about 8650 square yards (or nearly two acres), and
