Meteorology or Greenwich.
The returns of the Registrar-General show that the rain-fall in the
Metropolis, during the Quarter, has been 10.28 inches. Of the 10.28 inches
of rain which fell during this Quarter, 2.19 inches fell in the week ending
December 23rd, and 1.69 inches in the week ending December 2nd. The total
rain-fall in December, from the week ending Saturday 2nd to Saturday 30th
inclusive, a period of five weeks, was 6.75 inches. One inch deep of rainfall
on an acre weighs (allowing 10-lbs. to a gallon, which is the weight of a
gallon of distilled water) nearly 101 tons. The rain-fall during the year
1876 amounted to 24.2 inches, and was 1.1 inch below the average in 61
years. The remarkable deficiency of rain-fall in the six months ending
September was not counterbalanced by the unprecedented fall during
December. During the corresponding Quarter of last year the rain-fall was
7.50 inches. The mean temperature of the air was 47.2°, being 3.2° above
the average. In the corresponding Quarter of last year the mean temperature
was 42.8°. The coldest days during the Quarter were Friday, the 10th
November, Saturday, the 11th December, and Thursday, the 8th November,
when the thermometer indicated respectively 25.5°, 27.6°, and 29.8°. The
coldest day during the corresponding Quarter of last year was on Saturday,
the 4th December, when the thermometer indicated 23.3°, or 8.7° below the
freezing point.
The following table, taken from the returns of the Registrar-General,
