REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
For the Quarter ending 1st Jan., 1876.
To the Board of Works, Whitechapel District.
Gentlemen,
In the Quarter that ended on Saturday, the 1st January,
1876, the total births in the District were 653, and the deaths 659. The
excess of deaths over births has therefore been, during this Quarter, 6. As
the deaths of the non-residents which occurred in the London Hospital are
included in the mortality returns, a deduction of such deaths must be made
in order to estimate the correct mortality of the District. These deaths are
on an average 66 per cent., exclusive of sudden deaths and deaths from accidents,
of the total mortality in this Institution; and, as the total deaths are
187, 124 must be deducted for the deaths of non-residents, thereby reducing
the mortality of the District to 535, and increasing the number of births
above deaths to 118. In the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the
total births wore 675, and the total deaths 731.
In the Spitalfields sub-District the births were 178, and the deaths 98 ;
in the Mile End New Town 164, and the deaths 156 ; in the Whitechapel
North 98, and the deaths 67 ; in the Whitechapel Church 57 and 223 (in this
sub-District the London Hospital is situated); in the Goodman's Fields 99
and 52 ; and in the Aldgate 57 and 63. The deaths have exceeded the
births in the Whitechapel Church District by 166; but, from this number,
the deaths of 124 non-residents must be deducted.
The deaths in the London Hospital have been 187. In the corresponding
Quarter of the previous year the deaths in this Institution were
199.
The deaths in the Workhouse have been 75. In the corresponding
Quarter of last year they were 89.
