In addition to this return, the Inspectors report that they have forwarded
to the police authorities several notices of dangerous structures, and
have also given intimation to them of all the rooms which they have found
on a house to house visitation, or on private information, to be occupied by
more than one family These cases are about fifteen in number The Act
requires that all rooms, so let, be registered under the Common Lodging
House Act
Prom the above return it is seen that, out of 729 houses, containing'
about 2551 rooms, only 11 of them were found to be overcrowded The total
number of houses which have been systematically visited since January last
has been 2431, which (allowing on an average 3½ rooms to a house) contain
8578 rooms Of these rooms, only 94 were found to be overcrowded, which
is about 1 1 per cent , or 11 in 1000 These returns have been made from
information received from the occupants on a visit made in the day time by
the Inspectors If the returns are correct, there will be very few poor people
inconvenienced by the putting in force of the regulations as to overcrowding
If, however, the returns were to be made as the result of night visits, the
number in each room might be different
It also appears, from the above return, that 839 notices have been served
within the last three months upon the owners of property in consequence of
certain sanitary defects which were discovered on inspection I am, however,
sorry to have to report that some of the large owners of property have,
to a great extent, disregarded the notices, as is shown by the subjoined
table, which shows the localities in which notices have been served upon the
owners to effect sanitary improvements, but which have been totally disregarded
or only partially complied with
