district, there are 3,163 distinct families, and 1.535 inhabited houses, which, on an average, is
4.9 in a family, and 10.2 in a house. In the Mile End New Town sub-district, excluding the
inmates of the workhouse, (638) the average number to each family is 4.2. and to each house 8.9.
In this sub-district are situated the metropolitan chambers, which will contain 234 single men.
The average number in each family and in each house in the Whitechapel North sub-district, is
4.8 to a family, and 7.8 to a house. In the Whitechapel Church sub-district, deducting the
inmates of the London Hospital (405), the average number in each family is 3.9, and in cacll
house 7.6. In the Goodman's Fields, the average number in each family is 4.3, and in each
house 8.8 ; and in the Aldgate sub-district, deducting the number in the Sailor's Home,
(202), the garrison in the Tower (say 600), and those living on board of the ships in the docks,
and in that portion of the river which is included in the district (415), the average number in
each family is 4.4, and in each house 9.2 The average number of persons in each family iu
the entire district, deducting the inmates of the public institutions is 4.6, and in each house the
average number of persons is 8.8. If, for the purpose of comparing the average number of
persons in each house at the census in 1861, with that in 1851, we include, in both instances,
the residents in the public buildings, it will be found that the average number of inmates in
each house is at the present time 9.1 against 9.0 at the previous census. In 1851 the inhabited
houses were 8,812, whereas they are now only 8,667, being 145 less, which is a diminution at
the rate of 1.6 per cent., while the population has decreased 795, or rather less than one per cent. during the same period.
The density of the population in the entire district, is, on an average, 196 persons to
an acre, but as the area of the sub-districts is not equally proportioned to the number of
persons residing in them, some of the sub-districts must necessarily be more crowded than
others. The difference in each sub-district will be seen on referring to the subjoined Table, in
which the area and population of each sub-district are shown.

The sub-districts are arranged in the order of the density of persons to an acre.

*The total area of the Whitechapel District is 406 statute acres. In making the above calculations, the
inmates of the public buildings and sailors in the docks, &c., are omitted.
t It appears from the returns of the house to house visitation, that out of the 1,585 inhabited houses in
the Spitalfields sub-district, there are about 212 which consist of two rooms only. In 123 of these two roomed
houses, there are two distinct families residing.
