All staff are required to complete a medical history form before
appointment. From the information given it may be decided that a candidate
is fit to carry out the duties of the appointment, or it may be considered
necessary for a medical examination to be carried out, to
determine his or her fitness. Approximately 25% were so examined during
the year.

There were four private nursing homes in the Borough at the commencement
of 1968, one of which was closed during the year. Periodic
inspections were carried out at these establishments, which on the
whole maintained an acceptable standard. The three nursing homes
remaining licensed at the end of 1968 were as follows:-
