One of the most important aspects of the Home Help Service
is its preventive work. The provision of a Home Help at a
critical time can preserve the happiness and prevent break-up
of family life, and also enable aged persons to remain in
their own homes.
The number of Home Helps employed in the London Borough
of Redbridge is approximately 246 and many more are needed.
It is essential that the women who apply to be 'Home Helps'
must have a real desire to help others, have a cheerful disposition
and be able to adapt themselves to different households.
The duty of the Organiser is to visit the home of the applicant
as soon as possible. The main object of this visit is to determine
whether the applicant falls into one of the categories in
which the Home Help is allowed. If help is to be given, the
Organiser takes note of the number of rooms occupied by the
Applicant, and the conditions of the house in order to assess
the need."
