work alone and when a new appointment is made the therapist
will be working also with the physically handicapped.
Facilities Other facilities which exist for the after-care of tuberculosis
patients include assistance in the maintenance charges at
rehabilitation settlements, provision of free milk, boarding
out of child contacts and assistance towards the travelling
expenses of relatives visiting hospital patients. With the exception
of free milk provision, which was given to 161 patients
during the year, these facilities are rarely used nowadays, an
indication of the fallen incidence of tuberculosis. It is of
interest, however, that one open-air shelter is still provided
by the Borough; this must be one of the very few still in use
in the country.
Voluntary Statutory services work very closely with voluntary services
Bodies and Mr. H. R. Stanbridge, Senior Administrative Officer in the
Department's Personal Health Services Section, continues to
undertake the secretarial work of the Ilford Tuberculosis and
Chest Care Association. Mr. Stanbridge reports as follows:-
"The Ilford Tuberculosis and Chest Care Association, now
in its forty-sixth year, continued to help those patients resident
in the Ilford section of the Borough who are in reduced circumstances,
and their families, by providing them with assistance
not otherwise available through statutory sources.
Patients resident in the Wanstead and Woodford part of the
Borough may seek help from the Wanstead and Woodford Chest
Care Association, whose administration is conducted from the
Chest Clinic, Harts Hospital, Woodford Green.
Grants to Ilford patients in the form of extra nourishment
account for the major portion of the expenditure, but other
forms of relief, such as grants for clothing, household repairs,
travelling expenses to visit relatives in hospital, additional
heating, assistance with rates, and help with occupational
therapy materials are also made to necessitous cases.
The Committee are very grateful to the Redbridge Borough
Council for the financial assistance they have given, and also
for the facilities offered to allow the administration of the
Association to be carried on from the Health and Welfare
Department.
