Miss R. Jesson, Non-Medical Supervisor of Midwives,
reports:-
"The new London Borough of Redbridge midwifery service
employs one Non-Medical Supervisor of Midwives, 16 fulltime
midwives and two part-time midwives. In accordance with
the rules of the Central Midwives Board, regular inspections
of midwives were carried out by the Medical Supervisor of
Midwives.
52 pupil midwives had completed their Part II district
midwifery training and 11 pupils were still in training at the
end of the year, also 17 obstetric nurses completed their
course.
Ante-natal clinics are held weekly at Mayesbrook and
Kenwood Gardens, weekly at Hermon Hill from 1st April,
fortnightly at Heathcote and Manford Way and twice monthly at
Marks Gate. Four general practitioners continued to retain the
services of a midwife to assist at their ante-natal clinics.
All midwives are qualified to administer gas and air
analgesia, and three Trilene Inhalations. As in previous
years midwives with cars carried their own gas and air machines
and others were available at the Ambulance Station and were
transported to the midwives when necessary by the Ambulance
Station or by hired car. During 1965 housing accommodation
was provided for five midwives."
SECTION 24
HEALTH VISITING
Staff
On the appointed day there were 23 health visitors working
in the Ilford part of the Borough and 4 on the Wanstead and
Woodford part. Even with 27 health visitors we are 9 short of
establishment and it is the result of very hard work on the
part of those health visitors in post that there was no serious
breakdown in the service. Emphasis was placed on the most
pressing problems and parts of the health visitors work was
carried out by State Registered Nurses without the health
visitor qualification. The table in Appendix 12 shows the
number and type of visits made.
