No social service department can work in isolation and all
such statutory agencies must acknowledge the valuable work
undertaken by a tremendous number of voluntary organisations.
Redbridge has not been slow to appreciate this point and has
spent a considerable sum of money by way of grants to the
many voluntary agencies in the district. The fostering of this
relationship is an integral part of the Council's welfare
service policy. In future years it is hoped that there will be a
closer link between the differing organisations and between
those organisations and the Council to improve even further
the services designed to help those in need.
In conclusion, I would refer to the valuable assistance the
Welfare Service has received from colleagues in every department
of the Council and from many individuals and organisations
outside the Authority's services, and express my keen appreciation
of their help. My thanks are also due to the social
work, administrative, clerical, Homes and Centres' staff, for
their unfailing support and effort. Their task during the past
year has been almost overwhelming, but they have done
themselves great credit by the way in which they have tackled
it. To Dr. Gordon, Medical Officer of Health, I am indebted for
his forbearance and support in a difficult first year with this
new service in Redbridge.
Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Chairman
and Members of the Welfare Committee for their courtesy and
kindness to me and their live interest in the work of the
Service and their enthusiastic support of it.
