APPENDIX
BOROUGH OF MAIDEN AND COOMBE
MUNICIPAL OFFICES,
NEW MAIDEN,
SURRET.
As Chairman of the Committee responsible far promoting
health within the Borough, I am pleased to write the foreword
of this pamphlet. It concerns the introduction of smoke
control areas which will ensure the cleanliness of the air
in that part of the Borough in which you live.
Par many years we have been accustomed to drinking
clean water, walking in clean streets and enjoying the benefits
of clean food. Now a great effort is being made by local
authorities in the Greater London Area to clean the air.
This is as important a public health measure as the
introduction of piped water supplies and drains, of vaccination
against smallpox and the pasteurisation of milk. It is a
policy which will, when fully implemented, reduce the alarming
increase in the incidence of bronchitis and other lung diseases
and cut the very considerable cost of cleaning and building
maintenance.
I trust that you will assist the officers of the
Council when they visit by permitting them to inspect your
fireplaces. They will be pleased to give you advice regarding
the implementation of the Clean Air Act and on your heating
problems.
The staff of the Public Health Department are there to
help you - do not hesitate to seek their advice.
A. R. HILL.
Chairman,
Public Health, Works and Highways
Committee.
