INSECT PESTS
As in previous years the department was able to be of assistance
by giving advice and help to members of the public who suffered
inconvenience from insect pests.
Nuisance was experienced from wasps during the summer and the
department gave all possible assistance and advice. 141 wasp nests
were destroyed and the cost of the work was recovered from the occupiers
of the premises.
The carpet beetle, clover mite and ant continued to be most
troublesome. 17 rooms were treated for infestations of bugs and 5
rooms for fleas.
54 council houses were inspected for evidence of vermin.
By arrangement with the Surrey County Council eight school kitchens
and canteens were sprayed with a residual insecticide as a deterrent
against insect infestation.
CARAVANS
There are no caravan sites in the Borough and no licences were
granted to station moveable dwellings in the area.
The Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act came into force
during the year.
PUBLIC SEWERS
Stoppages in public sewers (combined drains) were cleared by the
department on two hundred and sixty-nine occasions. In a few instances
the assistance of sewermen from the Borough Engineer's department was
obtained and the assistance received is acknowledged.
RAINFALL
The following table shows the rainfall in the district during
1960, taken at the North Surrey Joint Sewage Board works, Kingston Vale
and Manor Park.
