BIRTHS.
During the year 531 live births were registered, being one more
than last year's total. The rate per thousand population was 12.2
comparing with an average for England and Wales of 16.4. Of the total
number 22 or 4.1 per cent were illegitimate.
DEATHS.
During the year 419 deaths were registered, a decrease of 67
compared with those recorded in 1957, the rate per thousand being 9.6
compared with an average of 11.7 for England and Wales. The infant
mortality rate was 15.1 compared with the figure of 22.5 for England
and Wales. 15 males and 3 females died from lung cancer, 5 less than
in the previous year. The death rates from this condition per 1,000
population were 0.712 for males and 0.123 for females as compared with
the rates of 0.783 and 0.119 respectively for England and Wales.
