BIRTHS.
During the year 530 live births were registered, being the same
as last year's total. The rate per thousand population was 12.1
comparing with an average for England and Wales of 16.1. Of the total
number 17 or 3.2 per cent were illegitimate.
DEATHS.
During the year 486 deaths were registered, an increase of 18
compared with those recorded in 1956, the rate per thousand being 11.1
compared with an average of 11.5 for England and Wales. The infant
mortality rate was 26.4 compared with the figure of 23.0 for England
and Wales. 17 males and 6 females died from lung cancer, 1 more than
in the previous year. The death rates from this condition per 1,000
population were 0.804 for males and 0.242 for females which is higher
than the rates of 0.759 and 0.116 respectively for England and Wales.
