During the year 516 live births were registered, being 17 less
than last year's total. The rate per thousand population was
10.8 comparing with an average for England and Wales of 15.5.
Of the total number 14 or 2.7 per cent were illigitimate. The
birth rate was the lowest recorded for a number of years.
