and an allowance has been made in the estimates for the current
year to repeat the operations at the appropriate time should
a recurrence of the infestation become apparent.
Bomb demolished houses having been rebuilt on the
majority of sites this has assisted in reducing the problems due
to the dumping of rubbish, etc.
Attention was given to the Plough pond which instead of
being a pleasing feature had become an eyesore. The stagnant
water was pumped out, a quantity of old iron, etc., removed and
the pond afterwards refilled with mains water. The hot dry
summer contributed to the trouble. For this pond to remain
without yearly becoming a nuisance, I am of opinion—
(i) The mud should be removed and the bottom cemented,
to facilitate cleansing.
(ii) More surface water should be directed into it, and
(iii) periodically attention should be given to remove debris
which is thrown into it.
Close liaison with the housing and rehousing officers has
been maintained in supplying particulars regarding families
living in overcrowded and other adverse conditions and by
supplying the permitted numbers for many houses, to enable
accurate records to be kept.
I am,
Mr. Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors,
Your obedient servant,
HENRY TUNBRIDGE,
Sanitary Inspector.
