No work on sewers was undertaken during the year. I am
sure that there is no serious problem in this district from this
cause. There are a number of factors which tend to make it
so, but plans have been made to treat some more sections during
the year 1946.
MISCELLANEOUS.
In September I felt obliged, owing to the pressure of other
work, to ask to be relieved of duties in connection with the
Borough Ambulance Service.
During the year the County Council deposited a quantity
of brick rubble, etc., on the estate at the extreme southern end
of the district to form the embankment for a new road. Houses
in the neighbourhood later became infested with crickets and
there was little doubt that the heap was providing an excellent
harbourage and breeding place for these insects. The heap was
treated with insecticides by the Pest Destruction Officer of the
County Council which had a beneficial effect. Insect killing
powder and distributors were obtained and given to householders
affected.
Blockages in drains have provided a good deal of work.
Simple blockages occurring in the interceptors were most frequently
met with, and in most cases were due to something
abnormal getting into the drain. In a few cases the trouble
was more difficult to overcome and the Engineer's Department
had to be asked to open the ground and deal with the cause.
Once again 1 would like to state that the foregoing represents
only a brief summary and by no means the whole activities
of the Sanitary Department.
I am,
Mr. Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors,
Your obedient servant,
HENRY TUNBRIDGE,
Sanitary Inspector.
