BIRTHS.
During the year 639 live births were registered, a
decrease of 46 under last year's total. The rate per 1,000
population was 18.0 compared with an average for England
and Wales of 17.6. Of the total number 39 or 6.1 per cent.
were illegitimate. The birth rate is only fractionally less
than the high recording of the previous year.
DEATHS.
During the year 326 deaths were registered, a decrease
of 55 under those recorded in 1943. The death rate per
1,000 population was 9.1 compared with an average of
11.6 for England and Wales. There was no single outstanding
cause of death calling for comment. The infantile
mortality rate was very low at 29.7 per 1,000 live births
and was even better for illegitimate infants than for
legitimate.
