BIRTHS.
During the year 685 live births were registered, an
increase of 68 over last year's total. The rate per 1,000 was
18.1 compared with an average for England and Wales of
16.5. Of the total number 33, or 4.8 per cent., were illegitimate.
This shows a fractional increase over the previous
year. The birth rate is the highest recorded in the
district since 1920.
DEATHS.
During the year 381 deaths were registered, being an
increase of 65 over 1942, and exactly the same figure as
for 1941. The death rate per 1,000 was 10.0 compared
with an average of 12.1 for England and Wales. There
was an increase in the mortality from respiratory diseases
and influenza, and a considerable increase in that from
heart disease. The increase over the previous year fell
almost entirely among the age groups over 65 years. It
is pleasing to record that the infantile mortality rate for
illegitimate children was nil.
