Municipal Offices,
New Malden.
June, 1939.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Borough of Malden and Coombe.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present to you my Annual
Report on the health and sanitary conditions of the
Borough of Maiden and Coombe for the year ended 31st
December, 1938. It has been prepared in accordance with
the Ministry of Health Circular 1728.
The Registrar General's estimate of population for
mid-year 1938 of 38,820 showed an increase of 1,550 over
the previous year. This is rather below the average
annual increase which has been taking place for a number
of years.
The corrected death rate was 8.2 per 1,000 population
compared with 11.6 for England and Wales. This figure
is below the average for the past five years.
The birth rate of 16.7 per 1,000 population compares
with 15.1 for England and Wales. This rate is the
highest recorded for many years. The infantile mortality
rate was 30.8 per 1,000 live births, the figure for the
country as a whole being 53.0. Such favourable figures
for births and infantile mortality have not been recorded
